Deep blues are the colors of oceans and starlit
night skies elegant and soothing. They're also
the magical colors Kramer and Peggy chose for
the dining room. In a point-counterpoint play,
stripes above the chair rail are energizing and
somewhat formal, but their effect is softened by a
loose freehand application and by the textural
sponging treatment on the wall's lower portion.
"Crisp-edged stripes would be nearly
impossible to achieve on the wall's orange-peel
texture," Kramer explains. "Plus, the freehand
look is more in keeping with the aged
Mediterranean feel that we were after." The
dining room is visible from the terra-cottawashed
kitchen, and Peggy adores the visual
vibrancy of seeing one color-complementary
space from the other.
Its tempting to stripe walls with contrasting
colors, but Kramer and Peggy resisted. The
monochromatic shades-of-blue stripes are more
flexible from a decorating perspective, Kramer
says. The deep reds in the chair upholstery
and a rug that Peggy loves look terrific here and
add contrast, but she could change the look on
a whim just by swapping her accessories and
tossing slipcovers on the chairs. Yellow, white,
terra-cotta, silver against the blues, just about
any hue would pop.
